In this fast paced world, I appreciate the slow process of building my pieces, like rock eroding over time. While closely watching the evolution of the shape and being responsive to possibilities and changes, I am able to express my ideas in the overall form as well as through detail. I enjoy the tactile quality of clay in all its stages, from the plasticity of the material to fired ceramics.
Utilizing a coil and pinch technique, I build large hollow sculptural forms. Hard edges are paddled in and textures are expressed by using simple tools. Use of slips, engobes and glazes add to the surface treatment.
Intrigued by Southern Utah rock formations, I explore shapes hidden in the rock. Using exaggerated form, this body of work resembles torsos in motion. Hiking through the rock in nature, cairns are used to mark paths taken and directions to go. I use this idea of stacked rocks in pieces emphasizing human presence and life experiences.
Today more than ever, I find working with clay is something I can turn to that is familiar to my experience of existence. The continual process of making art becomes an outlet for my emotions and a vehicle for personal expression in a form that is like no other.
