White takes on the color of everything around it, the blues and purples of the sky, the gold of late-day sunlight, a dove-colored roof, the vibrant orange wood of a floor. It takes time to notice this. As a painter, it’s my job to spend time and to notice. I am a classically trained realist painter, specializing in architectural landscapes.

I’m a graduate of Princeton University in Architecture and have studied drawing and painting at the Academy of Realist Art in Boston, the University of Utah, and Masters Academy in Springville, Utah. Over the last 25 years, I have exhibited my paintings throughout New England, the Southwest, Spain, Austria, and Luxembourg. In 2018 and ’19, I accompanied Academic Arrangements Abroad trips as their Artist in Residence, painting plein air in Russia, Belgium, Holland, France, and the Caribbean.

Plein air work can be physically demanding, but there is no substitute for working from life. Light and shadow dance in subtle ways a photograph cannot capture. Even the wind and the fragrances it carries inform my work. Scenes come alive when I stand in one place for a few hours.

While I work, people come up and talk to me about their towns and their lives. I’ve met a downwinder from Enterprise, pie bakers in Veyo, pony cart drivers in Gunlock, a coyote in a cemetery, a cowgirl from Panguitch, and a friendly highway policewoman in Morgan. Over the past few years, I’ve begun to travel Route 66 to visit the small towns along this historic byway. I’ve painted in snow, heatwaves, forests, and deserts. My paint has frozen, my canvas has melted off boards, and my hat has blown across many a Main Street. It’s been fun!
