Local Color

Local: (adjective) meaning in a nearby area; characteristic of a particular area.
Color: (Noun) Hue, tint, affect - properly causing a visual sensation.

I have been making photographs for nearly fifty years. I have travelled, with my camera, to many parts of the world and have photographed in black and white and in color. But I always return to the familiar surroundings of my upbringing; the mountains and deserts of Utah.

My photographs are about beauty and the ephemeral things of the world. While I photograph the landscape that seems eternal and unchanging, I am more interested in the light and weather that is constantly changing and fleeting. I am interested in the grand landscape as well as the intimate things of nature. Having been taught and influenced by the likes of Ansel Adams, Wynn Bullock, and Eliot Porter, photographers steeped in the traditions of “Modernism,” I photograph with an eye focused on form, shape, color and texture. I respond to the colors of autumn, the glow of the land under the ethereal light of sunrise, an emotion filled sky before or after a storm.
