I have been working with fabric, beads and color for over 40 years. I have made more than 100 quilts and many hundreds of beaded bracelets that I have mostly shared with family and friends. As a recently retired psychologist I have had more time in the last year to make space for art.

In 2013, my late husband, John, was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. As described in an article by Stephen Jay Gould, to “skew right” refers to being part of the long tail end of a survivorship curve. From the time he was diagnosed, John believed he would skew right.

I began making the type of fabric art in the current show when John and I went to Philadelphia for a month in 2015 for a clinical trial. The pieces I created allowed me to express myself in a much smaller form that was easier to undertake while we were traveling. I liked the miniature beaded quilts so much that I continued with it when we returned home. After John died in February 2016, I began integrating many of his silk ties into my work. All of the pieces in this show were created in the last year and are entitled “skew right” in his honor.

I love beads that sparkle, mixing textures and working with unexpected color palettes.
