Meri DeCaria is a graduate from the American College in London, England, has studied at the Pratt School of Design, New York City, and the Art Institute of Philadelphia, in Pennsylvania. Living and producing art in an age where social commentary and complex, visually difficult imagery are commonplace, Ms. DeCaria chooses to work in a more whimsical manner. Her work may even appear to be frivolous (with her use of brightly colored surfaces) but after a moments notice the viewer can see the topsy-turvy life presented on the canvas. Homes and other objects standing on their heads, moving in a mock inverted dance, portray the imbalance and uncertainty of contemporary life. Roads extending off the edge of the canvas, arrows and ladders all depict a sense, or a need, for escape. This can be taken as the necessity of flight or the choice of it, but either way there is a sense of impending departure and flux in much of her work.

Ms. DeCaria was recently commissioned by TRAX, the Utah Transit Authorities light rail system, to paint several panels on the railing at the Ballpark station. She has also completed public commissions for the Metro Sports Club in the ZCMI Mall and Gastronomy’s Oyster Bar, in Salt Lake City.
